B As far as how the cake looked, it was fine. The silver balls on the cake were so hard people were picking them off because they might chip a tooth. The next day (when we ate the top) they were much softer.Best of Cakes and Catering by Bernadette

Best cake hands down! I had a hexagonal 4 layer cake with 3 layers white/buttercream and 1 white/chocolate with a quilted pattern, a camouflage groom’s cake that was lemon with raspberry filling, and cream cheese mints. She called me Friday night to see if I had though of anything to put on the groom’s cake other than the camo, I told her that I hadn’t come up with anything, and she says “Ok, I have an idea, let me know what you think. I have a hunting figurine and can put ‘The big hunt is over’ on the cake” OMG, perfect! It was AWESOME! When my DH saw this cake, I thought he was going to pack it up so nobody could put a knife into it and take it home for a trophy. The main cake was awesome, she made it exactly what I wanted it to be. Cream cheese mints were top notch. Very detail oriented and does excellent work. She was my first vendor booked and was one of my best vendors. I will definitely be going back for b-day cakes, etc! From: snookies0608
2007 Cost -- Starting at $3.50 a sliceC ~~ I hate giving bad reviews, but because this was the ONLY thing I was not happy with, I feel that I have to. I showed the baker a picture of the cake I wanted. It was a fairly simple design, but there were key things about it that made it unique. We went over and over the design (both myself and my DOC) with the baker, and she assured me everything would be OK. It wasn't until the week of the wedding that she called me to tell me that she could not get the fondant lace I wanted, but she thought the kind she could get in would be sufficient.
On the day of the wedding, she called me at noon to ask me if the cake could be delivered two hours later than scheduled. This was AFTER my DOC told her she was not to call me the week of the wedding -- especially the day of. When she arrived, she complained to my DOC that she had never seen or done a cake like the one I wanted, which is NOT what she said when we met.
The product itself was not really even close to what I wanted. Key elements of the design were all wrong, making it an altogether different cake. I'm also disappointed with the price, because she changed her quote twice during the process. She also forgot to send me my contract until I called her twice to ask for it.
I really wish I had gone with a different baker and forfeited my deposit because I just had a bad feeling as time went on. We just didn't click and I didn't feel like we communicated well. Even at the tasting she tried to change the time and location at the last minute.
I will say that at the tasting the cake was excellent. I heard from many people that it was the best wedding cake they had tasted, though.

A ~~ Caren was a little tough to get ahold of and we had some miscommunication a few times. I was a little worried something would get messed up but she came through with flying colors. Our cake was beautiful and delicious. The only part that I noticed is she forgot the chocolate fudge filling on one of the layers and used buttercream instead. Still delicious and the guests never knew. Every piece was gone by the end of the night!Cakes by Combs

B+ ~~ Samantha was great to work with. She designed 3 cakes for us for the reception: the wedding cake, groom's cake and birthday cake for my dad. My dad isn't a huge cake person, he loves ice cream - so she invented a Rocky Road cake with Rockies 'n' Cream filling - it was incredible. She last me come for extra cake tastings until she got the birthday cake right. The only thing that didn't turn out as well as I had hoped with the groom's cake, while it looked good from afar, I thought parts of it close up looked slightly sloppy.
From: cmsucarebear
A++++++ ~~ Sam did a FABULOUS job on our cake. She hand-painted shamrocks on the cake, and put ribbon around the bottom of each tier. It was well worth the money. The piece I tasted was so good and moist. Everyone at the reception was Raving about how good the cake was. Scott didn't get to taste it, as I shoved it up his nose...lol. I don't think we can wait a year. We're going to eat the cake soon. Once again, I highly recommend her. From: drewie
B ~~ Samantha was very easy to work with, and the cake was absolutely beautiful! She did exactly what I wanted, even though I didn’t have a picture to show her. Plus, her prices are great. We had a 4 tiered round cake, 2 layers chocolate with raspberry filling, 2 white with raspberry filling, and a red velvet sheet cake. The only reason she gets a B is that the chocolate cake was a tad on the dry side, but it was still very good.
From: DrNelson
As usual, Sam did a fantastic Job. There's a ton of pictures of the cakes posted on my photographer's website. I actually never even saw Sam, she was in and out while I was getting ready, so I left it in the hands of my DOC to help her set up. Everything was fantastic. She did 13 individual cakes for each of the tables, and a 2-tier cake for our head table. It looked great, and more importantly, it tasted FANTASTIC. We had even more compliments on the cake than we did the food. Everyone loved it.From: ErinE683
A+ ~~ Affordable, beautiful, and so freaking good! We ended up eating the top layer a few weeks after the wedding, because we wanted to enjoy it while it still tasted good. We're trying to think of excuses to order another cake from her. From: i_heart_james
Price: $1.50/slice (she is now $2.00/slice)A ~~ The cake tasted so good! We over estimated our numbers and ended up with an entire tier left over. The cake was super moist and everyone loved the raspberry filling. Sam also did a great job setting it all up with very little assistance or input. The only thing that was odd is that there was this weird bump on the top tier, but it was in the back so it wasn't a big deal. We had her write "my favorite" on the part where we were going to cut the cake, but we had to turn it around backward b/c of the bump - that was kind of sad for us, but not a big deal in the scheme of things.
From: JoelandLayna
A ~~ Holy mother! Her cake is amazing! I literally had family members calling and emailing me specifically to ask about her cake. I put on 3lbs in one week and I can blame Sam (in a good way!). The only reason she doesn't get a + is b/c the color blue for the cake looked a little green, but after planning our wedding, I wouldn't wish "light blue" on my worst enemy. It has to be the hardest color to match! From: kujess
B- ~~ Before the wedding, Sam was great to work with and always extremely quick to respond to questions/emails. Her prices are the best around, and her cake is delicious. Our cake looked exactly as we pictured, and tasted delicious. My only complaint is that on the wedding day, she showed up earlier than what we had agreed upon, and before the cake stand was brought over and set up. She knew we had a stand for the cake, but rather than waiting for it, she set the cake directly on the cake table and left. Thanks to my bridesmaids and Powell Gardens catering staff's creativity, they were able to get the cake on the stand, but it was very difficulty and could have led to disaster. Not to mention it really stressed me out the day of!From: lesary
A ~~ Sam was so patient with me the few weeks before the wedding. We had already decided on a particular amount ahead of time, but we continued to get rsvps and the numbers kept growing. The cake kept getting bigger and bigger and she kept updating. The day of-the cake was exactly what I pictured and she did a great job with the rest of the decorations. She has cake stands now and that was beautiful too. The cake was exactly what we wanted and tasted great! Everyone talked about it.From: KS*sparkler*
Samantha did an excellent job on our cake. It was delicious and looked exactly like the pictures I showed her. We ordered an additional top layer for our anniversary which was packaged up nicely and delivered with the cake. I would recommend her to everyone. From: merifrances
We had a four tier cake as well as 8" cakes on each of the tables. The cakes were beautiful and delicious and I highly recommend Sam for your cake. The guests enjoyed being able to cut thier own slices of cake at their leisure, but the only piece of the large cake that was eaten was the one for our cake cutting. Even though I never had a chance to meet Sam we loved working with her through email and her cakes are a great value. From: missmlt
A-/B+ ~~ The cake was there on time, it tasted great, and it looked great too. The only thing is that it came with Raspberry filling, which we didn't order. We didn't order any filing actually, and I don't like raspberry, but I could just not eat that part, and everyone loved the cake. The thing is, I just don't get how you can order something and get something else, it turned out ok in this case but I would be a little cautious if you want something super specific as from the latest Combs reviews she seems to forget some of the details on orders. But that just my observation, the cake was good, it was on time, and it was reasonable. From: MrsHunter
We booked Sam immediately following our tasting with her and I have no regrets after the final product. She put together a very realistic sock monkey cake for my husband's groom's cake, most people thought it was a stuffed animal and couldn't believe you could eat it!! Our wedding cake was beautiful and exactly what we asked for. It was so moist that it literally started falling apart while we were cutting it, but I didn't care, the taste was worth it!! We barely had any leftover and what we did have leftover made it through our honeymoon for me to enjoy yesterday!! There is nothing better than eating yummy cake while opening up gifts!!From: otis
C ~~ I'm probably the only person in the world to give Sam a less than stellar review. The cake was EXACTLY like I wanted and tasted divine. However, it was the leaning tower. I understand that every tier had filling and that makes for a much heavier cake but it should have been better supported. In fact it was leaning SO BADLY that we had to move the cake cutting up considerably in the timeline because I was becoming concerned the cake was going to topple over. The most upsetting thing is that, though the cake leaned worse and worse over time, it was leaning to begin with. Therefore every picture of my cake looks as though it is about to collapse, I don't have one nice picture, and ALL of my guests expressed their concerns to me about it so I know it wasn't one of those things that "No one notices but the bride. Also, I was to have a shuttle cake, full sheet, WITH FILLING. I had the cake but instead of the filling being between 2 layers of cake, it was just spread on the top. It still looked nice, I just wasn't aware that this is what I was going to be getting. From: Rockstar79
A+ ~~ Wonderful cake and she was very easy to work with. I will post pics of my cake, but if you want to see they are in my pro pics on epagafoto.com. We had lemon cake with raspberry filling. Yum. She also did a jayhawk grooms cake for us with chocolate ganache filling - and just like otis the filling was on the top, but I didn't mind. Timely delivery, great setup, wonderful to work with. She made us 3 tasting cakes which I thought was great. Very affordable. From: shonnaluvsjd
A lot of people rave about Sam. I was not disappointed with her work, but I wasn’t totally excited either. At our initial meeting I gave her a picture of the cake design that I wanted, but several months later, for some reason, I began having doubts about her ability to pull it off (it was a very "artistic" design). I had another meeting with her a month prior to the wedding and changed my design. She showed me a mock up she did of the original cake that I wanted and if I would have walked into my reception and seen that cake...I would have cried. The one bite I had of our layer of red velvet cake was a little dry. Everyone said the white cake was wonderful. I think that if you want something traditional and simple…she’s great. If you want something a little more "out there"...there may be someone better suited to your style. From: trayhay
B+ ~~ Okay, I am probably the only person who has ever given Smantha Combs anything but an A+ BUT I have a good reason! I had given her our cake topper so I wouldn’t forget it. Where I lined up for the wedding was in the reception room. Its about 5:30 and still no cake even though she told me she would be there between 4 and 5. No biggie -- until she showed up with no cake topper! Here’s the thing, she lives in Belton and the wedding was at the plaza, I knew there was no way she would be able to make it back with the cake topper. (Yes, I was very stressed at that point -- no cake topper and no minister!) Luckily, her husband was able to run it up and she was putting it on the cake as the wedding started at 6 pm -- so thankfully it all worked out okay, but the photographer and videographer had already taken some pictures without it, so I’m just hoping that got some of the cake with it on there! Otherwise, everyone LOVE the cake -- it was absolutely beautiful and delicious! From: tsunami
A+ ~~ I'm currently eating the leftovers for breakfast. Moist, simple, and perfect. Three tiered cake with a mix of layers for each tier: chocolate, white, and strawberry. No fillings. Buttercream icing. Sam was on time, helped set up the cake table, and made sure everything was ready before leaving. An excellent choice and one I'm going to run right back to for our first anniversary cake. From: violetfemme
A ~~ Read your reviews about Sam and was not disappointed. We did a sparkly cake with the edible crystal flakes. The cake was supposed to be lavender but looked white. I was only disappointed for a sec because it was still beautiful and tasted awesome! We did different flavors on each layer. One was Peanut Butter with a chocolate ganache filling...yummy! The groom's cake was adorned with candy rocks, chocolate covered strawberries and a mini version of his prized Scrambler four wheeler.Cake Girl KC

A+ ~~ Megan is a friend of a family friend. We knew her cake was yummy, and thought she did nice cake design work based on the cakes she’s done for family events and her website. However, she beyond exceeded our expectations with our wedding cake. I hadn’t even seen the cake upon arriving at the reception and guests came up to say how wonderful it looked (we also got lots of compliments on how yummy it was!) The cake was exactly what I described to her. Megan was so easy to work with and flexible. She did a nice job of estimating how much cake we would need (there was just enough for both of our families to have some to take home) and she was very reasonably priced. The Cake Lady

I cannot recommend her. This the review that puts a knot in my stomach. Margie did my sister's wedding cake, and my niece's first birthday cake. Her cakes are delicious and beautiful. But our wedding cake was messed up. Our cake was straight out of a full page wedding magazine photo- layer of cake along the base, layer of flowers, two more layers of cake. Very narrow ribbons around the top of each layer, tied in bows. Straight out of a Martha Stewart magazine. Our change was instead of the blue ribbon, we brought her red to match our colors. Simple simon. The plan was to meet our florist at Hawthorne at 2:00 that day. I arrived at 1:40, and she had come and gone. So, the florist had to build the layer of flowers with the top 2 layers of cake in place. And, the bow on the center tier of cake was 3-4" out of alignment with the other layers. What the?!?! Nothing could be done, so I had the photographer shoot it from the side where it was just plain ribbon. DH & I picked that cake out very early on - he spotted it first- and I was really disappointed. The next day, I discovered the bows were stuck in with wire, and we could have moved the one, but of course wouldn't have tried that unknowingly. I emailed her afterwards, and she said "I thought you wanted them cascading." 1. No. and 2. cascading would have had all 3 in different places and 3. You were supposed to be there! The cake was jacked up. She did not apologize. And she had a full page color photo of the design we wanted. We reviewed it at the booking, and a couple of weeks ahead. A real shame. From: madgey28
Margie did the cakes for my sister's wedding and my best friend's weddings earlier in the year, so I knew she would do a fabulous job. I wanted something a bit "out there" and DH wanted something a bit more traditional, so she was able to help us get to a compromise. The cake tasted incredible and she did a good job with what we asked her to do. She is also extremely affordable. My only disappointment was the pink that was on the middle layer turned out to be more of a baby pink instead of a hot pink.

I mostly commuicated with Jennifer by email. I emailed her what I had in mind and pictures of what I was wanting. C ~~ We used Fran a couple of years ago for a graduation cake and it was the most delicious cake I’ve ever had in my entire life. So, when it came time to book the wedding, it seemed like an easy decision. We lived in Denver which made it hard to meet with vendors, so we scheduled and appt. with her on a weekend we’d be in town SPECIFICALLY for cake tasting, so my fi could try it out as well. When we showed up, she didn’t have any samples. Like she forgot maybe? Since we’d used her before, we decided to go ahead with it and she made a sample cake later. The week or so before the wedding, I wanted to go talk to her again about the design for the cake, and she had no record of our original discussion. She knew she was booked for the day, but the papers (which she’d photocopied for me and I had) where we drew out the design were no where to be found. She would have just delivered a plain cake, which is certainly not terrible in the big picture, but still disappointing. The design I drew out at her house with very specific measurements, etc. came out very…frumpy. Also, she had some personal stuff a few months before the wedding (they had a fire at her house) so two weeks before the wedding she said she couldn’t make the groom’s cake (a cheesecake.) I just thought it would have been much more professional had she outsourced the cheesecake on her own and delivered it, instead of making it my problem to find someone new. At the end of the day, the cake showed up and it looked okay and didn’t fall over-all important things, I guess. The Frosted Tier

A ~~ The cake was absolutely delicious and was very pretty. The prices were reasonable, especially compared to the vendors who were at the bridal fair my fiance and I attended in April. Tammy met with me after I had picked out a design, and when I realized that the design would require far more pieces than I needed (and therefore wasn't really in my budget), she was very patient with me while I went through her books and picked out another design right there in the meeting. My only complaint about the cake was that my in-laws didn't save any of the leftovers for us (except, fortunately, the top tier)!Helen's Cakes and Cookies

Donni MiddletonA+ ~~ Donni was freakin' awesome! She was so exciting and down to earth from the moment we met her. She did both our groom's cake for the RD and our wedding cake. I've read a lot of reviews about how their cakes tasted good but looked like they were about to fall and let me tell you, there was no leaning to our cake. Wedding cake was $2/slice and the groom's cake was ~$17 total. I brought her a blown up photograph of the the cover of the video game (World of Warcraft) and she did the rest. Whether or not you're on a budget- check her out- there's no need to spend a fortune on cakes, this girl knows what she's doing. I can't say enough good things about Donni- she rocks!

A- ~~ The cake looked and tasted fabulous!! My only complaint is that I felt Michelle was a little unorganized and I was worried about the details all getting taken care of (had to send my check twice, and she forgot a birthday cupcake for my friend. Overall, the cake was beautiful, not too $$, and everyone said it tasted great. Would recommend her, just stay on top of the details. From: MrsKCBride06
A+++ ~~ The cake was amazing!! She also did my shower and grooms cake.. The shower cake was guava and TO DIE FOR!! It had sparkles all over it and was soo incredibly good! The grooms cake was in the shape of a drum, which she had never done before, but it was amazingly good and beautiful!! I can not recommend Michelle enough – she was fabulous to work with and her cakes not only looked SPECTACULAR but they tasted like nothing I have ever tasted before!! Wonderful! From: rose4jc2
A for taste, B+ for design ~~ Well Tyler and I didn’t get to eat very much of the cake, the pieces we took from the reception ended up getting kinda smushed on our plane ride! What we did have tasted great and our guests just raved about it. I have to give a B+ because the cake design was not exactly what we asked for. We were underwhelmed by the grooms cake, which was supposed to be modeled after a scrabble tile. There was also beading around each layer that we had not requested and a lot of sparkles. If I could do it again I would have shown her more pictures and been extremely explicit about what we wanted design-wise. I recommend this vendor I just recommend you be more specific about what you want! From: Tigersbear07

I really can't say enough about Just Cakes. I was a little scared when I heard how many cakes that may do in a day but they showed up on time and got it set up fast and it was perfect. It was fresh and it didn't lean and I think it was even better the 2nd and 3rd days. We had a 4-tier with buttercream frosting and the layers were chocolate, white, spice and amoretto. We got a separate layer for free for our first anniversary. It was just so beautiful and tasted amazing. I got comments all night and Stephani at the Club said it was the best looking cake she had seen in a long time. She didn't get to taste it.From: lawgalkc
A ~~ Crystal, the owner of Just Cakes, works out of her home which helps keep the cost of her cakes down. She's been making cakes for 25 years and does an awesome job. We did a 4 layer butter cream cake that only cost $1.75 a slice. She also did the grooms cake for $55.00. Each layer of the cake was a different flavor and tasted wonderful. Our cake was very simple, square with brown ribbon and then the florist added some flowers. The groom's cake was a little unique though. DH loves wrestling and UFC fighting so I wanted something to go with that theme. Crystal did a great job of recreating my vision. The cake tasted even better than it looked. A+ ~~ I am a huge fan of Denise and the crew at K’s for a number of reasons! Denise is the mother of my best friend and made me a beautiful and delicious cake. At the last minute, I let her know that I had more guests than she was expecting, so she whipped out a sheet cake and made it just as beautiful. I owe her many thanks! A non-wedding related reason I love them is because during every week my niece was in the hospital recovering from her brain injury, Kay and Denise sent a monster-sized platter full of goodies for the nurses there. (Ava was in the hospital for about 10 weeks).
